The team Prestige Wrought Iron were recently involved in an exciting commercial project and part of the team helping to restore grandness to Rockhampton’s St Joseph’s Cathedral. As one of the most significant heritage buildings in Central Queensland, we were honoured to be chosen to be part of the process.
With the distinction as the most northern Gothic style Cathedral in Australia, St Joseph’s Cathedral is characterised by impressive spires, detailed stone work and intricate stained glass windows. Since the structure was created in the late nineteenth century, this is the first significant restoration work that has been carried out and something that been welcomed and embraced by the local diocese and the Rockhampton community.
We worked with the stone mason team to create a stunning wrought iron fence around the permitter of the church grounds which helped complete the heritage look of the building. The sandstone used in the fence was selected to match that of the main cathedral building and the rich contrast with the softness of the sandstone and the imposing looks of wrought iron created a highly appealing and authentic finish.
Along with from creating the right gothic styling, the wrought iron fencing included signature driveway antique driveway gates to provide ease of access to the cathedral for funeral, wedding and other vehicles which will need to access the church. Not only are these gates practical they also provide security benefits with their high imposing iron spears. The gates also include other decorative trim including circular insets and also include the same design as surrounding iron fence panels to create a uniform look.
The Arch Bishop of the Rockhampton diocese was extremely happy with the finished result and we are too! It’s just another example of the applications for using wrought iron in a commercial setting, and a reminder of the stunning beauty of the material.
